Colebatch Motte

Colebatch Motte was a medieval castle in the village of Colebatch, Shropshire, England.

The castle comprised a steep earthwork motte, along a tributary of the River Kemp. Today, the motte is 22 m (72 ft)  wide and 5.5 m (18 ft) high, and would have been surrounded by a ditch. The motte would have been topped with a small timber fortification. The castle was built in what was then the township of Colebatch, part of the Lydbury North manor. It may have been constructed to help protect either Clun Castle, by the de Say family after 1130, to protect Clun from Welsh attack from the north, or by the Bishop of Hereford, to help protect Bishop’s Castle, which controlled the Lydbury North manor.

The remains are protected under UK law as a Scheduled Monument.
